Cardinal Moore leaned back in his first-class seat, considering his next move as the plane accelerated down the runway. The priest, Mathers, was a disastrous failure, there was no doubt about that. He hadn’t even contacted the Cardinal to say he couldn’t find the old goat, Sister Veronica, sent no word, nothing. It was too bad. Unprofessional and unprincipled. Cardinal Moore ran a tight ship, and there was no room for this kind of inefficiency in it.

Of course, he’d left Henri in charge of tracing the errant nun. Damn her. Things had been going so smoothly up till then. But she couldn’t be far, and she wouldn’t have much money with her. The senseless woman wouldn’t be able to get up to much anyway, she didn’t have the intelligence. He cast his mind back to how she’d snorted and cried at the sight of the boy’s body. Typical female, driven by emotions not logic. She’d probably fled because she didn’t want to be ensconced in the closed convent in Cumbria. When he found her, he’d make sure she never left the damn place. A life-long contemplation session should bring her to heel.

Sister Julia had phoned just as he was about to leave for the airport. Apparently, the old nun, Sister Anastasia, had died in her sleep. Old age and a stroke. He’d given instructions for the funeral to be organised, and left them all to it. He had much greater things on his mind. He thought ahead to his meeting at the Vatican. There was something he badly needed his contact there to do that would help with the investigation, bring it to a satisfactory close. It was always tricky to raise such delicate matters within the inner circle there – a circle he was feeling increasingly part of, and quite rightly so. But considering the nature of his meeting in Rome, he was confident his contact wouldn’t mind correcting a particular document for him, one of the only Vatican documents in existence about priests’ children. Given Sister Veronica’s Houdini-like tendencies it would be sensible to close down every possible loose end regarding Jamie Markham and his heritage at this stage.

He shut his eyes, a caustic grimace remaining etched on his face.
